We work with them to promote peace and justice, and strengthen their livelihoods to attain sustainable and transformational development. The main reason of its foundation was to cope with the difficulties suffered by the Somali people inside their country due to the ruthless civil war faced by the country over the past 19 years and the collapse of house holds economies and with its abject poverty. In order to support vulnerable Somali societies suffering from these above mentioned scourges especially poverty, hunger, starvation and transmission of many contagious diseases SARAPO decided to give voluntary support to the community and fundraise to assist most vulnerable or disadvantaged people in the country. SARAPO’s main office is in Baidoa Somalia and has a sub office in Nairobi Kenya. Target Population: The main beneficiaries of (SARAPO) projects in South-Central Somalia are farming and pastoralists’ population, along Jubba and Shabelle River Valleys and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Other beneficiaries include IDPs and other poor groups living within urban settings, who are victims of continuing violence, displacement, flooding and droughts. Interventions to support the target populations include providing livelihood support and recovery, rehabilitation and management of communal water resources, complemented by hygiene promotion and nutritional support. Other supports include providing support to vulnerable members of the Community such as women, elderly, and youth for income generating activities.
Current Project Details:
Water Sanitation Hygiene Promotion (WASH): (SARAPO) has a partnership with Somali Diaspora in Europe, Canada and United States with WASH activities in Bardera District where it is implementing WASH
project targeting 6,500 Households. Somalia Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU) assessments conducted in June 2003 showed a fall in watery
Diaharia in all population groups living along the Juba Riverine region which is the project’s target region. The project team’s skills on community mobilization
and training of hygiene promoters created awareness and a cadre of volunteers with skills and knowledge requisite for effective response to the floods that annually affect the Juba Riverine as a result of the success achieved.
(SARAPO) and the Diaspora are underway to embark on an assessment to undertake an Urban Water Supply Project for Bardere Town in Gedo Region.
